Our representatives serve as crucial bridges between members and the broader union, volunteering their time and undergoing training provided by SOMWU to support colleagues in the workplace.
They strategize and mobilize members for campaigns, focusing on key issues that impact workers. Their close collaboration with members aims to enhance working conditions and raise awareness of employment matters both locally and nationally.
Moreover, representatives play a pivotal role in recruiting new members, ensuring the growth and strength of the union.
Every workplace representative and member is affiliated with a local SOMWU branch, which, in turn, is part of a regional grouping.
In situations where SOMWU members encounter workplace challenges, we encourage them to initially reach out to their representative. These representatives can assist individual members by facilitating discussions with employers about their concerns.
Reps may arrange for members to receive support from within SOMWU or collaborate with them to access necessary information and assistance.
Subsequently, the steward or representative will offer guidance on addressing the issue, which may involve engaging with the employer if required.
Many SOMWU representatives receive training to handle matters concerning employment law, grievances, and disciplinary issues. They often advocate for members facing workplace difficulties and may accompany them to grievance meetings or hearings.
